The Idaho Disaster Preparedness Act of 1975 (Chapter 10, Title 46 of the Idaho Code) created the Bureau of Disaster Services and subsequently, the Bureau of Homeland Security and provided for the creation of local organizations for disaster preparedness. According to the Act, it is the policy of the State of Idaho to plan and prepare for disasters and emergencies resulting from natural or man made causes, enemy attack, sabotage or other hostile action.
In 2004, Bingham County completed a Mitigation 20/20 plan addressing potential hazards in the County. The mitigation plan was compiled with help from local emergency responders, officials and members of the public.
Idaho BHS takes an all-risk, all-hazards approach towards planning and preparing for natural or man made emergencies, technological emergencies or other hostile action. Through preparation, planning, training and exercising. Idaho BHS is able to effectively manage the consequences of and minimize the impacts of these events.
